Initially born as a quintessentially-Kawakubo response to the 2008 financial crash, CdG Black began as an all-black exploration of some of the label's most popular styles. Intended to be sold exclusively through small-scale retail spaces in defiance of the mass-luxury department store expansions which had been prevalent in the years leading up to the economic crisis, distribution and availability of the diffusion line has remained deliberately scarce. Years on, Comme des Garcons Black remains one of the label's most exciting outputs, having slackened the all-black directive in order to introduce elements of print, colour, and motif - cornerstones of the CdG aesthetic language.
The collection also includes an exclusive collaborative capsule, combining the dark aesthetic of Comme Des Garcons' creative force Rei Kawakubo with the forward-thinking sportswear expertise of Nike. A collision of icons, the two come together for a range of premium athleticwear with a brooding edge.
Central to the founding ethos of the CdG Black line, distribution points were kept limited with only 11 global points of sale. To mark the launch of CdG Black at END.'s Newcastle and Glasgow flagship stores, Comme Des Garcons proudly display a premium window installation featuring this seasons rose and chain motif.
