For SS22, Carhartt WIP takes a deep dive into the archives, transforming utilitarian classics from a laidback angle.
Carhartt WIP was founded in 1989 with a distinctive objective: to uphold Carhartt’s legendary, century-long workwear heritage while steering things in a newer, more contemporary direction. That meant tapping further into the subcultures who were already adopting the brand as their staple uniforms outside of workwear, ranging anywhere from skaters to hip-hop enthusiasts.
Those key fundamentals which underpinned Carhartt WIP back in ’89 — seamlessly fusing classic workwear and relaxed streetwear — remain unchanged today, with the label’s SS22 collection showcasing that.
There are nods to Carhartt’s roots throughout the collection, from the graphics that reference the label’s home city, Detroit, to the workwear-inspired garments and details used. Pastel hues, bold patterns and pigment-dyeing treatments — applied to both the Michigan coat and Double-Knee pants — feature heavily throughout the collection, striking the perfect balance between laidback and rugged that Carhartt WIP is loved for.
