The souvenir jacket, or sukujan is an item of clothing with a rich history: born out of the Second World War and originating in Japan with the express purpose of appealing to American soldiers. This Alexander McQueen version adopts many tropes of the original – crafted from a wool-silk blend, it is presented with pale, oyster-toned sleeves and fiery red front and back panels, and adopts the classic, varsity-inspired silhouette that underpinned the 1940s Japanese incarnations. Opting for sleek, high-impact embellishment over busy branding, it is minimally marked at the chest with a sequinned beetle motif.
