THE AIR JORDAN 3 “WHITE CEMENT”: Len’s Unapologetic Sound
8 March 2023To celebrate the release of the 2023 Air Jordan 3 "White Cement", we visitied the capital city to spend the day with up-and-coming South London rapper Len.
The AJ3 represents a cornerstone in the history of Air Jordan, having been the first sneaker designed by Tinker Hatfield: the creative responsible for reigniting a long and fruitful relationship with the legendary Michael Jordan. This year marks 35 years since Hatfield’s debut under the Air Jordan line, and to celebrate, Air Jordan is taking us back to where it all began with the AJ III “White Cement”.
In honour of the sneaker’s release, we met up with Len, the South London rapper carving his own space in the UK scene, to spend a day with him in his home city of London. We shone a light on both his creative practice and his deep appreciation for all things Air Jordan, something which he links back to his love of MJ himself: “the best NBA player to ever grace the game showing charisma on and off the court, it’s hard not to feel like the man while wearing his sneakers”.
In recent years, Stockwell-based Len has been cutting through the noise for his genre-blending approach to hip hop, plucking different elements from the sonic landscape to create something that’s unique and cutting edge. From his earlier work such as “Life on Mars” to his later projects “METHMUZIK, Vol. 2”, Len has consistently delivered a distinctive and unapologetic sound, cementing himself as one of the rising stars of the UK underground.
This uncompromising energy is something mirrored by not just the legacy of MJ himself, but also that of the AJ3 and Tinker Hatfield. The “White Cement” is a tribute to that, with the 2023 rendition constructed to the true OG ’88 specification, compete with elephant print overlays, a red Jumpman at the tongues and Nike Air branding at heels. To drive home the classic look and feel, each pair comes housed in a box that’s distressed to look like it’s been stored since ’88.
