DAIWA PIER39 showcases a relaxed take on utility for SS22, transforming technical materials using oversized cuts.
DAIWA PIER39 falls under the umbrella of leading Japanese fishing brand, DAIWA, something which is deep rooted in the utilitarian approach of the sub-label. DAIWA PIER39 was founded in 2020 by Nakada Shinsuke — a designer who spent time cutting his teeth as a director of Beams Plus — with a combination of technical outerwear and contemporary, fashion-focused cuts being at the forefront.
The label’s SS22 collection is the perfect embodiment of that, showcasing a seamless fusion of DAIWA PIER39’s utilitarian roots and a more relaxed, city-friendly aesthetic. Technical fabrics are used in their abundance, like GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ and breathable stretch denim, then cut to oversized silhouettes to adhere to Shinsuke’s signature look.
The heritage behind DAIWA PIER39 is clear to see with the garment’s details, thanks to a heavy use of pockets and D-ring loops throughout the collection. The sub-label’s technical approach even extends to the accessories, with trucker caps and jungle hats crafted using the same windproof, water resistant and highly breathable GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ fabric as the outerwear.
