Prepare to explore the history of Salomon. Starting from its snowy mountain origins in 1947, this guide will walk you through the evolution of its iconic silhouettes and provide essential tips on all things Salomon.
Salomon is riding high on the wave of popularity, fuelled by its ever-expanding line-up of collaborations. From the likes of Sandy Liang to Palace, each collaboration has significantly elevated its fashion status. And of course, the END. x Salomon ‘Foraging’ collaboration was truly one to remember, where its XT-6 was given a makeover to imitate the distinctive appearance of ‘Truffle’ and ‘Porcini’ mushrooms.
From what started as a ski brand, Salomon has evolved into one of the hottest brands in streetwear, spotted on the runways of Fashion Week’s biggest cities and the Super Bowl Halftime show, where Rihanna sported the Maison Margiela MM6 x Salomon Cross Low.
Let’s delve deep into Salomon’s success, from its humble beginnings to taking the footwear scene by storm.
Salomon started manufacturing ski edges, setting the stage for adventurers to conquer the slopes. Its innovation journey didn't stop there, it led them to pioneer safer ski cable bindings with the ground-breaking Skade in 1955, an answer to the perilous nature of the equipment of the time. Two years later, they introduced "Le Lift," a revolutionary binding with a heel release mechanism to reduce ski injuries.
Salomon's commitment to enhancing outdoor experiences didn't waver. The brand's dedication to innovation shines through Roger Tallon's creation, the rear-entry SX90 ski boot in 1979. Fast forward to 1990, and Salomon embarked on designing its skis for the first time, unleashing the S9000. In 1992, Salomon made its foray into hiking footwear with the "Adventure Range," a design featuring an internal fitting system and a zipper that remains progressive to this day.
The brand's love for adventure racing set the stage for the explosive growth of trail running in the early 2000s, with Salomon playing a pivotal role. Trail running wasn't just a sport, it was a global phenomenon, largely thanks to Salomon's trailblazing technology and worldwide promotion.
As we fast forward to 2023, Salomon, once synonymous with technical trail runners and ski gear, has firmly established itself in the sneaker realm. In a world dominated by big sportswear giants, Salomon's surge is fuelled by the evolving consumer preference for technically-innovative products.
The trend of gorpcore, gaining momentum in 2017, played a vital role, too. It signifies the merger of fashion with technical outerwear and was accelerated by the pandemic, which sparked a widespread desire for outdoor escapades. Salomon's journey from a snow-clad paradise to a global trailblazer in outdoor and sneaker culture is an adventure in itself.
Salomon's journey started in 1947 from the picturesque French Alps and the vision of François, Jean, and George Salomon. This family trio, initially in the business of crafting steel saw blades, shifted gears when they drew inspiration from their Alpine surroundings. The brand is now a part of the Finnish sporting goods conglomerate Amer Sports and has been since 2005.
Salomon is celebrated for its technical expertise, creating products that excel in challenging outdoor conditions, from skiing to snowboarding and trail running. Today, it’s made a mark in the industry by incorporating performance and style, for fashion enthusiasts who prioritise function and fashion. Read on to explore Salomon products, each tailored to an environment.
To “help people unleash the best version of themselves through fulfilling outside sports experiences.”
Sahl-uh-mun
How did a 75-year-old skiing brand become a major player in fashion footwear? It began when Salomon teamed up with The Broken Arm, a unique concept store known for curating emotionally evocative design. This collaboration allowed Salomon to diversify into fashion. In 2016, the "Advanced" line was established within Salomon, with the help of Jean-Philippe Lalonde, to evolve the performance line.

In the early 2000s, Salomon, inspired by local races and its team, saw a need for lighter, faster footwear. Designer Reglan G Brewer, nearing the end of his contract, developed the revolutionary Speedcross. This lightweight, protective shoe altered Salomon's course, reshaped mountain running, and boosted trail running's popularity. The Speedcross has been updated in 2007, 2011, 2016, and 2019, with the Salomon Speedcross 6 being the latest grippy, lightweight and protective trail model.

The shoe's new chassis further enhances its ability to safeguard sensitive joints without hindering your freedom of movement.
The Salomon XT-6 is the latest silhouette from the XT line. In 2013, it stormed onto the scene and quickly became the go-to shoe for elite athletes tackling ultra-distance races in some pretty tough conditions. The silhouette has made a comeback and now leans more towards athleisure and lifestyle than performance. You’ll find this silhouette in a vast range of colourways and in a line-up of collaborations from the likes of END., Sandy Liang, Palace and more. If you did choose to wear this shoe for the trails over fashion purposes, the technical features remain, such as its ContraGrip™ outsoles, an Agile Chassis System midsole.
Just like the XT-6, the XT-4 is your ultimate fashion and all-terrain adventure shoe. It’s slightly bulkier than the XT-6 and this model comes in a range of prints and colourways. The Salomon XT-4 is loaded with cutting-edge tech like the ContraGrip™ outsoles, and an Agile Chassis System. So, whether it's style or substance you're after, the XT-4 has got you covered.
Another silhouette from the XT family tree, the original Salomon Wings have faced and conquered the roughest trails out there. But, with the rise in gorpcore trends, the Xt-Wings 2 has also been a silhouette favoured by footwear enthusiasts and fashion brands alike for collaborations. With its iconic chassis and range of vibrant colours, it's easy to see why.
The Salomon RX Moc is the epitome of comfort and relaxation for your feet. Built with the aim to minimise any strain, this lightweight, breathable summer shoe is perfect for post-exercise recovery.
Salomon has made a name for itself by continuing to push the boundaries in fabric innovation, textile engineering, cushioning systems, and functional hardware.
Advanced Chassis
Salomon's Advanced Chassis is a midsole support plate made from thermoplastic urethane, its primary purpose is to enhance foot stability by minimising side-to-side movement, ensuring a secure and supported step.
Energy Blade
For an extra burst of energy in every stride, the Energy Blade is engineered to channel and amplify power, acting like a springboard that propels you forward with improved acceleration.
Matryx
Matryx stands out as a Salomon exclusive. It’s a lightweight mesh combining Kevlar - a strong, heat-resistant synthetic fibre - and high-tenacity polyamide. This unique blend offers not only breathability but also water-resistant properties, ensuring your feet stay comfortable and dry.
Contagrip®
Salomon's signature Contagrip outsole is designed to deliver optimum traction on a variety of surfaces, whether they're dry or slippery. It keeps you steady and confident during your outdoor adventures.
Sensifit
Sensifit is a carefully designed overlay that wraps your foot from the midsole to the lacing system, ensuring a snug and secure fit from all angles. It provides the comfort and support you need for any activity.
EnergyCell

While the upper part may not be fully waterproof, its mesh fabric is known for its rapid drying properties. Additionally, it provides superior drainage and ensures ample air circulation.
If they’re integrated with GORE-TEX technology, then they’re waterproof. Salomon’s GORE-TEX footwear can handle the toughest conditions.
The weather can be unreliable at times. To keep your Salomons in top condition, it’s best to clean off any dirt and mud after each use. A gentle, damp brush and clean water work wonders. So, avoid using a washing machine, as it's not suitable for your shoes. Then, allow your footwear to air dry at room temperature; steer clear of any external heat sources, including direct sunlight. Your Salomons will thank you for the TLC.
The recycling process of running shoes is complex due to the various materials involved and the difficulty in separating those materials. This process prompted Salomon to launch its index.01 project, which focuses on creating a high-quality pair of running shoes that are completely recyclable and can be easily broken down when they reach their product life span. These shoes can then be repurposed into new items like ski boot liners. Salomon plays a direct role in the recycling process by arranging for the free pick-up of used running shoes and subsequently recycling the two primary materials: the thermoplastic (TPU) from the sole, and the recycled polyester from the upper part of the shoe.
The Salomon XT-6 is generally suggested to be taken in a half size larger than your usual. If your feet aren't particularly narrow, you may find them tighter than usual due to the snug upper and arch support.
The Salomon XT-4 provides a marginally broader fit than the XT-6, so choosing your actual size is likely the best choice as its upper isn't as restrictive. But, if you have wider feet or like a bit more wiggle room in your footwear, increasing your size by half won't lead to any problems.
The Salomon Speedcross tends to have a narrower fit, providing a slightly smaller feel. So, to help avoid any discomfort in the toe box section, we recommend sizing up by half from your usual shoe size.
In case you haven’t noticed already, Salomon has taken the fashion world by storm in recent years, especially with their innovative collaborations - and these have been an important milestone in the brand’s fashion success. The Salomon Advanced program has infused the brand with a fresh energy by creating designs that truly blend function and aesthetics. Some notable collaborations that have helped Salomon cement themselves in the fashion field are:

We tapped the shoulder of our Design and Collaborations team here at END. to get an insight into what they love about Salomon, how they style their Salomons and what inspired them with their latest END. x Salomon XT-6 'Foraging collaboration:
“The fact that Salomons can be dressed up or down. The shoes don’t just apply to the outdoors anymore, it brings a different perspective to the brand that they haven’t seen before. They’re very easy to wear with them having a speed lace and a pocket, the use of outdoor materials make them great for the weather here in the UK.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I really like the XT-6 but I love the RX moc too, you don’t see too many people in them and they’re also very comfortable. The Salomon Acs Pro also seems to have some energy around it, I think the footwear fans like how it was originally designed by Christian Tresser– it brings a nostalgic feel even though it’s a pretty modern silhouette.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“Aside from the END. pairs, I really like the most recent MM6 collaboration with the Salomon quick lace.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“My first pair of Salomon’s was the XT- Wings 2 Sirocco, the first collaboration we did with Salomon. The colour was really different to anything we had seen Salomon bring to market so it made quite an impact. I still wear them to this day, they’re a great silhouette with an even better colour story.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I use my Salomons for a lot of different things, mostly for everyday wear like going to the shops or to work. They’re great for the outdoors but I’m always too afraid I’ll scruff them/make them look dirty so I try to not use them for muddy walks - even though that is the shoes main purpose! As it does rain a lot here in the UK, this is my go-to shoe for the more miserable days – I know for sure then that my feet will stay dry.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I now wear both of my pairs of END. XT6s for everyday/predominantly fashion. Although, they are practical for the wet weather we have here in the north east, so they have actually replaced some of my other, less practical footwear that had been in my rotation.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I take my true size in Salomon. Sometimes I go up 0.5 if I’m buying them for walking, and if I do activities in my shoes, I normally like a little more space in them just in case.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I half sized up for both XT-6 pairs I own but got my usual size in the XT Wings 2.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I sized up half a size, I am usually a size 5.5 and got a 6.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I style my Salomons depending on what colour they are, I kind of start with the shoes and then try to tie in colours on the upper of the body. Normally I’m wearing baggy pants with the Salomon – and then a tee or sweat for everyday. If I'm out in the countryside walking/doing an activity, I try to find active pants to wear and then some type of fleece and beanie hat to keep me warm.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“Casually. Maybe a simple t-shirt with a wide leg pant or a long skirt.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“I love that Salomon has a real history with skiing and sports, it's an authentic story that they can tell as a brand going forward. They don’t just focus on colourways they try to push the boat out when it comes to design features for example – Maison Margiela and Boris Bidjan Saberi – it's great that they play in the world of high end fashion.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“The reason we chose to team up with Salomon is because of the history the brand has with the outdoors, and the fact that the brand is entering into our world of streetwear. We feel we can tell an amazing story with the brand and bring it to life in a new market that they have not seen before.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
“The idea came from seeing people after covid forage for ingredients, people started to get creative and find hobbies after the lockdown ended. I studied people’s different passions and saw that foraging was one that was on the rise. With Salomon being an outdoors brand, I thought the two linked very well. I started to look at what the END. assets would look like if we went down the mushroom route and I really liked the idea of shooting someone wearing the Salomon’s whilst foraging. As well as this the colours of the truffle and porcini worked very well on the Salomon’s, they’re both wearable colours.” - Collaborations Footwear and Apparel Designer
