Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, pairs up with iconic anarchist Jamie Reid for a 2017 slant on punk subculture.

For his first menswear show as solo Creative Director at the helm of Valentino, Pierpaolo Piciolli unveiled his vision of the modern male in the form of an unexpected collaboration with British artist Jamie Reid.
Credited as one of the defining forces of the British punk aesthetic, Jamie Reid’s infamous ransom-note lettering obtained cult status in the 1970s and 80s when the Sex Pistols established Reid as their go-to cover art collaborator.
This canonical partnership between two of Britain’s most rebellious artistic forces birthed some of the most widely identifiable iconographies from the punk era and through his new collaboration with Valentino, Jamie Reid reintroduces his anarchic vision to a new generation.
Emblematic of the Valentino brand, the collaboration features star and camo motifs uninhibitedly clashed with collaged slogans and emblazoned on a range of apparel and accessories.

The slogans, which Reid developed exclusively for Valentino, include ‘Beauty is a birthright’, ‘Reclaim your heritage’, and ‘It seemed to be the end until the next beginning’. Drawing deliberately overt reference to political turmoil and uncertainty - underwritten by Piccioli’s own period of uncertainty following the departure of his long-time creative Paramore and previous Co-Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri -, these slogans repackage the tenets of punk culture for the man of 2017.
Contrasting against the wider collection which focused on a far more reserved range of print-free menswear staples, the Jamie Reid collaboration established itself as the indisputable centre of attention at Valentino this season. Punk isn’t known for its subtlety, after all.
With his previous creative partner, Maria Grazia Chiuri, quickly making her mark as the first female Creative Director at Dior, Piccioli used his first solo menswear show as an opportunity to display his undiluted vision of the Valentino man and it didn’t disappoint.
Set to be some of the most coveted apparel pieces of the season, the Valentino x Jamie Reid collaboration is available to shop now at END.
