To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Air Force 1, Nike partners with aesthetic visionaries from across the creative industries and around the world in celebration of the shoe’s defining colorway, white-white.
Working in close partnership with Al Baik - Nike Senior Creative Director - the AF-100 project set out to explore and pay homage to one of the world's most iconic sneaker silhouettes of all time.
Following Roc-A-Fella's Kareem "Biggs" Burke's iteration of the classic AF-1 Low silhouette, and designer Don C's celebration of the Force lineage with the AF-1 Hi, creative force at the pioneering technical activewear imprint Acronym, Errolson Hugh, was tapped to enter the fold.
Deciding to focus on the reinvention of the Lunar Force 1's on-and-off process, the team quickly honed in on the idea adding a zipper closure to the classic 2013 silhouette. Keen to play with the theme of deconstruction, Hugh made the decision to play with zipper placement and application rather than radically altering the original silhouette to allow space for an integrated closing system. The result is a cut-and-paste iteration of the sneaker with an open-source design sensibility.
The Nike AF-100: Lunar Force 1/Acronym '17 by Errolson Hugh will launch at END. on 2nd December.
Rather than trying to blend the new element into the existing design, we thought to make it as distinct as possible, and that meant almost like it's an intervention into the shoe. We let it sit there as a juxtaposition, which is why the ends of the zipper stick out at the bottom and the top and why it's so raw.- Errolson Hugh, Acronym -
