With over 10 years experience practising calisthenics, Jermaine Straker of Cali Kulture is one of the UK’s leading calisthenics coaches. He has an incredible passion for the discipline and his knowledge of calisthenics is second to none. The founder of London’s Cali Kulture, a calisthenics community and academy, Jermaine has made it his mission to make calisthenics accessible to everyone and to break the stigma that it is a sport only reserved for men.

Utilising exercises that don’t rely on anything other than your own body weight, calisthenics offers a method to build exceptional functional strength, anywhere, at any time. Making everyday tasks easier, the practice reduces stress on your joints while simultaneously building your strength, resulting in a longer lifespan for your joints. Increasing you resting metabolic rate, as well as enhancing and developing muscular and aerobic stamina, calisthenics enables you to burn more calories without the necessity for excess equipment – it is one of the only way to build muscle and strength without the use of weights.

When you practice calisthenics, you build a real connection with your body.  It’s unlike other types of training because you’re using your own body weight and not an external weight. The focus is also different, instead of it being how much you can lift and what you look like, it’s more about what you can do. You’re training for the next movement, the strength and aesthetics develops as a byproduct of that. What makes calisthenics truly special is the social aspect, the community. Being able to combine movement with conversation and laughter is unmatched.
